The tragic failure of the restriction list aka Variety is dead

I am mainly making this post because @LemonSqueezy called it when he quit the game but some people defended the list with their lives and were claiming that the list and the dev built teams (copyright @NMEGaryOak, what is meant is that those archetype teams like dolphs, Spikies, Abys mainly built themselves because all you have to do is spam monsters from the same type and you get rewarded with a ridiculous boost while it actually requires zero thought to put into team building because the game event tells you that you should use these monsters together) were great for the game.

These people also claimed that spamming archetype teams is no different from S Tier Spam and that its somehow refreshing to not see all the S Tier Spam time and time again. When Lemon quit he basically said that some S Tier monsters are so strong that people will spam them no matter if they are restricted or not but the dev built teams will kill all the other variety that was left before. This would lead to a meta where you will either face S Tier Spam or dev build stuff like Abyss, Dolphs, Spikie etc. This is also a direct consequence of the restriction list and recent nerf not being very good at targeting the real problems of the meta.

If you take a look at the PvP report you can see that Lemon was absolutely spot on. In red I highlighted any monster that could be considered S Tier Spam (and I was pretty soft here not including Wraithhost and Shiny spectrefox). Those are monsters that were popular before the list and which werent affected by being restricted. In green I highlighted all the “dev built” Category monsters and in blue I highlighted Auraleus (+Nauti) because Auraleus is the first mythic to make the top 10 most used frontliners. Given the rarity of mythics compared to legends (and Super Epics), its insane that Auraleus was more common than Shiny Spectrefox or Padrinorca in FL. It’s also a great example for how hard the List fails to do its job sometimes because the mythics restricted are Gremoris, Naturgoul and Novemdomina. And its not like we have seen a sudden rise in popularity for Nauti+Aura. The fact that the combo is obnoxiously overused is pretty obvious since many PvP seasons.

As you can see S Tier Spam is still a thing but now the dev built teams have drastically reduced the space for everything unique and creative. Please note: I dont want to attack or shame anybody who is using these monsters or take anything away from them. I just want to say that the combination of the recent spam release of “same type monsters” (Spikie, Abyss, Dolph, Fairies, Gummy Dragons, Fairies, Worms) + the list arbitrarily restricting stuff instead of going for most used + nerfs being way off target + the massive boost you get for spamming what the game tells you to spam isn’t healthy for the meta.

@ItsSherlock make a regulation that anyone who wish to make a point here should post their ranked pvp team before that. So that we can understand where their points are coming from🤝

We are all biased in one way or another. I don’t mind people defending the stuff they are currently using. I would do the same.

The team that finished first used abyssoldiers and spammed protectors for the first 40% of the team. Case in point.

It is quite effective at demolishing AP spam (even if it often uses AP spam simultaneously)

I defended the list before because I saw theoretical potential in it but it´s not beeing used so it might as well just get deleted

Same bro i am wasting my time doing events with epics and SEs rather than playing ranked PvP.
This time it was way too much , the teams were so similar .
The pos + Myst was like everywhere .
Mid was dolphins and ap
Endgame was pretty much same everywhere.

In all honesty playing PvP with my mini facing low tiers players (top 100 and less) was a better experience than playing with my main .
Those teams had variety and matches were enjoyable every game

I’ll mention it once again: this game would benefit (even though most people would absolutely loathe it) from a Penalty/Incentive List.

You can use all the monsters you want, no restrictions whatsoever. But using certain monsters will decrease the Rating you gain, while using others will boost it.

Example (numbers are made up on the spot):

If you use 2 monsters from the Penalty List you’ll get, say, -50 Rating per match. Each additional monster from the list yields an additional -50 rating.

Instead, for every two monsters you from the Incentive List in your team, you get +50 Rating per match.

I think this would be efficient, just because it directly involve players aiming for top spots, by intervening on the Rating you get.
You can run whatever you want, but your goal of reaching top spots won’t be as easy to reach if you S-Tier your way through.

I wouldn’t create an incentive list, just a penalty list. Otherwise everyone will be running the same thing from the incentive list possibly creating less variety.

The biggest plobrem will be with players like daniel , squinty who uses a lot of mythics . A lot of them won’t be in the list which will give them more points .
Btw that list will work perfectly for the majority .

Fair point. I thought of it as a small list, comprised of the most unused of the unused monsters of the game… But it would probably lead to people running them all the same way.

I considered that too… in an Utopion world, mythics and legendaries would be proportionally penalized/restricted.

To be honest already built teams like spikie/fish /dolphin ■■■■ is annoying. Not because it synergizes well but it has way too many failsafes. Even garden fairies are balanced now. I’d say they are reall nicely balanced now.

When we are talking abt stuffs that come in a group I don’t think anything out classes the og fds. They are best. Million times better than spikey/fish gt ■■■■ . But yk why people don’t use fds. Cuz they are not tanky. They synergize really really well. But you have to build around it in a way that it becomes hard to kill them.(fd maeve broken tho. Which actually is a mistake)

But fish/dolphin meta doesn’t need building. Cuz they can just stay alive without any support.
You don’t have to build around them so that they live longer. They have def boost and stun immunity.
Fds don’t have that .
Neither do they have a 3x buffed camo monster which is a gt/stun counter and retri monster.

You know what dolphins are fine too.
Just take away the def boost and stun immu and make something more interesting it will be fine.
But as Poseidon.
He is just a failed design.

Dude he is meant to support them in a way that Abyss soldiers get advantage and he gets some value for himself .Not to overwhelm a game by spamming give turns to something like aura and having no other actual use.(i absolutely ■■■■ on that tho. Please don’t come at me with “bad cuz you lose”)
It’s just a failed design where devs ran out of ideas and made a tanky gt monster. Which is actually pretty cringe. Specially when paired with aps. It doesn’t even have any raw restriction. And tbh it doesn’t even do much. It can just give turn. Not a single thing it can offer other than that.
It’s way too cringe at this point.

As one of the real fan and early users of CW i can certify that even they can be cancerous too.

Dolphins/Poseidon needs a huge rework. More like most of the ganged tanky units if the game should be reworked.
It doesn’t make sense for them to one shot others but not get one shot. Make flipper 10k def it’s fine. Just don’t make it one shot my tanky units Cuz it supposed to be a tank.

Dolphins - lose the defense buff but keep attack buff and stun immunity

Charge frontlines - 50/100tu restriction from the start of battle on swift charge ally

A.S. Poseidon - decrease defense buff from 200% to 100%

AP spam - auto protectors cannot redirect attacks aimed at other protectors. auto protect+ mons cannot redirect attacks aimed at other auto protect+ mons (this includes protect teammates and protect focus mons)

Keep ATK/DEF buff and give each one of them an unique passive instead of Stun Immunity. They’ll be still used in group, but they will find places in other strategies too. Fresh!

In fact, everything bothers them, do whatever they want, just create another team no matter what happens, but hey, it’s rare to see how they ask for nerf from almost everything that comes out just because they are not able to counteract it, from everything mentioned in the thread they probably dolphins are the strongest and perhaps and to some extent a problem since with only 3 my team improved a lot but hey I don’t think anything is currently strong enough for a nerf, they are not yet competition for awake spam
