iOS/mobile games: are they "real games?"

One of the best things about playing mobile games on my ipad is that there is a large variety of games that you can buy, from action games to rpgs, strategy games, puzzles, etc. and you can easily jump from playing one genre to another. Most games i have seen for ps3 and xbox are usually a bit more action orientated (although this is probably because of me). The “hardcore” gamers often do trash talk mobile gaming and honestly, I really dont blame them considering that games like candy crush and clash of clans are pretty much becoming the “face” of mobile gaming like how games like Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and a few other popular console games could arguably be considered the “face” of console gaming.

So are mobile games real games? Yes…for the most part, I would guess around 85% to 90%. But lets be honest here, there is a fraction of games on the app store that are not games because they aren’t judged on the player’s skill, strength, or luck that google defines a game to be, but based on how much money the player can dump into the “game.”

I fancy myself a hardcore gamer. And I love ios games :3

I’ve played every console pretty much but xbox one

My favorite accomplishments in gaming;

93 platinum trophies on ps3

Beat ruby and emerald weapon on final fantasy 7 with no summon or glitch abuse and just cloud

I beat devil may cry 4 on the joke mode where every single thing kills you in one hit

I was #2 in champions covenant in the world in dark souls 2 for a while (but now passed by some people and hackers)

On white knight chronicles (MMO essentially) I was one of the highest guild rank players, I only knew 3 people higher than me before I became inactive and quit (community died out)

When I was young I was in a top combat clan In runescape (donut judge, I was like 12)

On armored core 4a they had a monthly reset of rank and had both ranked and casual matches. I got to top ten twice. Niche game though.

I beat dark souls 1 at level one, and a 1 hour speed run on that game

Most FPS I have a 2-3 KDR

I beat dragons dogma in 34 minutes in my speed run

Etc etc etc

For ios games, I played a thousand hours in reign of dragons and I loved it before it became too greedy

I played rage of bahamut and was very strong there and it met the same downfall as reign, so I left

I played infinity blade one two and three to ridiculous levels

I’ve beaten bloons tower defense 5 on every track and mode pretty much

And played ports of games I never played as a kid on IOS

I think that first of all, yes of course they are “Real” games. Why? Like kooks definition, they do count. I also think they are just as fun. They might not go as in depth or have as much background in some, but thats being sterio-typical about games. Almost like game racism, because maybe the few apps you tried werent as in depth, cullen. Some iOS games can go really in depth or “Hard core” Such as the infinity blade series (a very costly but fun app btw). The apps are very fun and do get “Hard core” (Guessing that by that you mean Having alot of detail, or a more in depth plot/story.) I honestly do think that iOS games shouldn’t be treated any different then pc or console games, just because most games (I will admit alot of iOS games are kinda weak) aren’t as in depth or hardcore.

I do play infinity blade, and the gameplay is fun and I’m good at it; but even my favorite author who wrote a book for Chair games about infinity blade couldn’t save the story.

Mind you, I wanted to like the book and story more, becuase I love all his original works.

I even liked when he finished the wheel of time series, even though that series wasn’t my style. (He finished it due the the widowed wife of the author asking him to)

Might be off topic but if you like fantasy read his series the way of kings, very deep intricate and GOOD book…

I think I’ll attach a screenshot of my character from the last infinity blade
My character. Level 110 or so I think. All legitimate, didn’t use that glitch or do that “sorry here’s a lot of money” event

Woah, someones an IB Cool guy, and I can see what you mean, It’s your opinion but my opinion is still that IOS games are just as good as computer or console games

>edited
>cool guy
:’)

I’m just trying to show my experience a little bit so i have some base so say; I am not "one of the hardcore gamers who trash talk ios"
And that I love the games, I just don’t think they should be compared to console and PC when they are so different.

And yeah everything is subjective and everyones got an opinion.

That’s just mine.

YA FEEL ME ?

Yep ios games are games i mean the name is even in the words … “ios GAMES”

And just like cullen i have alot of achievments i have (wont list them >_>)

I find alot of ios games hardcore, i just had to search and search and search.

Like Piano Tiles (Dont tap the white tile) once you get faster in Arcade or Rush it gets intense and when you try getting under 8 seconds on classic or a high score on Relay it gets intense… Enough about that game :stuck_out_tongue:

Any “game” can be called a game, no matter what the difficulty, just different games are meant for different groups of people.

Thats just a little bit of my opinion.

It depends on what you mean by “hardcore gamer”, Ashley. Computer platforms do have a wider selection of games, however.

Windows/Mac have been going for long time. iOS came into existence in 2007, and so is much newer. That much is expected.

Hi again, people. Long time no see!

Well, in my opinion, mobile games are real games. Like other games, they entertain a player’s desires and tend to be similar to those games on computers, or wherever you feel like relating. Have you ever considered, “Pokemon is not a game?” Well, I know there’s going to be some derp out there who’s gonna say yes, but seriously. Pokemon is very similar to many of the mobile games, or ios games, or wherever. In fact, many have been modeled off it, hoping to be as successful, and some have, but others have died out, not even being able to scratch the surface. If you consider pokemon as a game, why wouldn’t these “mobile games” you are referring to be games as well? Let’s take another example. Erm, how about runescape? You know, that old, died out game that nobody knows about? I’m pretty sure we’d consider that a computer game, not a mobile game. Well, as many of us know, the game “Arcane Legends” feels like a very, very remotely similar game to runescape. And please, whoever’s just going to revoke my claim for the sake of being a pain, just admit that these are games that I am speaking of. If runescape is a game, why couldn’t “Arcane Legends” a mobile game, be considered a game? Well, this is just my piece of cake, but this is what I think.

Sorry deadpool :frowning: and yes, thats a great way to put it storm. I agree with what your saying. A game is anything made to entertain or an activity people can participate in. Soccer is a game! Basketball is a game! Pokemon is a game! Minecraft is a game! And so on… They all are sorta purposeless (well, thats debatable) activities we participate in for enjoyment!

I’m not a programmer, I imagine the fewer selections is due to the lack of support? As in, not being able to program 9 GB games.

I know there’s some huge games that push towards 6-7 GB on the App Store, not sure about android

I’m not a programmer, I imagine the fewer selections is due to the lack of support? As in, not being able to program 9 GB games.

Or just that there hasn’t been enough time. There should be no need for a 9 GB game, anyway. That’s silly. (And I mean super high download size in general - there are many techniques to use here. For example, you can have the game pull content from a server at times or what not instead of it shipping with the game. That greatly reduces download size).

Things like Skyrim is pretty much about 9GB haha.

And yes, it does reduce download size, but I imagine it will take longer as well, if you have a really bad connection?

Could. and makes it online only.
There are much bigger size games than skyrim that don’t have as expansive maps.

Take the last of us for instance, it’s 27 Gigs or so

I imagine even a scaled down port of that would be pretty substantial.

Secret world is 38 gigs

Even max Payne 3 was like 25 gigs

And Kojima says they had to cut metal gear solid 4 to fit on the ps3 and xbox 360 discs

PS3 has two layered blue ray, so that would mean MGS4 is around FIFTY gb

I imagine that would be painful to download.

Probably because it had so many Really HD cutscenes

Goodness gracious, I am never, ever getting The Last of Us if it’s 27 GB. That’s terrifying…

And what is Secret World?! 38 GB?!

Kudos to the devs, I guess, but that’s A LOT of stuff and I can’t imagine how long and tiring the process must’ve been…

It’s an MMO

I’m sure there’s huge MMOs like WoW that push even farther with all expansion packs.

Metal gear solid 4 was broken in to two discs for xbox because no two layered discs and it’s 50 GB. They even had a cutscene making fun of xbox users on ps3 about “switching discs”

Get the last of us by the way, it’s great :3

OH YEAH KOOKA just remembered!

There’s a thing in the last of us where you can play while it’s downloading, but only after 50% or so.

That was my favorite exclusive of the season, great storyline, get it.

I was just kidding. I wouldn’t let something like size get to me… uh, unless I was running out of space, of course. But maybe when I’m of-age… ;>

Um, alright, let’s get back on topic before somebody yells at us. ^^;

Mobile games. “Real” or not. Yes.

I agree with Cullen Murphy that they are very different, but I think some of them are comparable. When you say non-iOS games are always better than iOS games, it’s pretty much like saying all PS3 games are better than PC games. There will be some games that are just… suck. And others are just… awesome.

Honestly, we can go back and worth with this, but the verdict will probably be the same: it depends on the person.

Server pulling is one example. There are plenty other options developers can take to reduce file size.

The giant download size tends to come from textures, music and sound files, models, etc. Of course, pulling them from a server is a great idea for reducing download size (especially if you do asynchronous background downloading, so as not to interrupt game play at all). But yes, that would require some online at some point.

None of the games I’ve made have had a huge download size yet because I don’t go overboard on artwork (the games I’m making don’t require it), so I’m not the most experienced in the area. But you learn things…
