Could you make a summary please, my attention span doesnt last that long
Hahaha you really did beat out KD for longest post. I did read it all, but there is far too much to respond to on a phone.
Iâll just say this, it would be lovely if we could all make 70k a year and live in a grey house and drive equal grey cars wearing equal grey clothes with 4 weeks PTO, 95% healthcare plans.
But where technology is right now, thats impossible. 30 years from now when AI and robots have replaced most jobs we will likely be forced into the above scenario. But it simply doesnât work that way now.
And the fact is, different jobs have different values. And the value of those jobs is determined more by how many people are capable of doing that job, and the economic impact of that job, than the societal impact of that job.
Frankly some of the nicest but unambitious and disinclined to study I knew in college (University) decided to be teachers and nurses. Simply put, âanybodyâ could do it. Therefore the pay for those jobs are lower than the jobs that only a very few are capable of/willing to do like engineers and doctors.
And lastly, I think everyone is entitled to try to get whatever they want without impediment. But nobody is entitled to any end of those attempts.
My wife and I made a combined income of 30k a year while we were in grad school. And we saved $500 a month! How did we deal with that? We chose not to have kids, we chose to live in a very cheap apartment, we chose to make our entertainment walking in the local park or reading. We didnt have the nicest cars or the nicest phones. We had the most basic cable internet.
My point is - we knew what were choosing and we made that lifestyle that we chose work. And we loved every minute of it and donât feel like we were unfairly denied anything we needed. We were entitled to try, but we werenât entitled to anything more than we could get. And 30k in the US is something anyone can get.
@ItsSherlock I did read that all and it was a great post. I agree with it all.
My parents are a great example of where this has been skewed by the past. My mum is far more intelligent than my dad and after getting straight Aâs went to the best university in the country for her course, a highly skilled profession. She was then immediately hired by the university and has spent the rest of her life lecturing there as well as using her profession in the field. My dad left school at 18, taught himself how to work with computers then got into business and was immediately earning more than my mum. Later he switched job to an IT business that was expanding and successful, more than doubling his salary. Ever since heâs been in IT and his salary has only increased. My dad is not a genius nor is he doing a job that requires years of training to do. However, he somehow earns triple or more what my mum does.
There are numerous cases of the above, which is why I think taxes are an absolutely necessary thing and where they should be used is for public welfare and the general running of the country that wouldnât otherwise be paid for (e.g. transport infrastructure). Healthcare is a big part of public welfare because itâs such a huge expense to the individuals having to pay for it that itâs so unfair to those without money.
Iâm glad my dad pays so much in tax because I know so many people who work really hard for very little. I have friends who run their own catering business. They work 7 days a week (job dependent) and sometimes 6am to midnight. A couple of months ago they had their first holiday in 5 years, finally saved up and able to take time off.
It really frustrates me when I see others wasting their money. If we all lived like you did then our countries would have a lot more money they could put into improving things.
I loved your reference to communism! Iâm so glad we donât have to live in that âidealismâ.
You should be upset that your dad pays so much more in taxes compared to other people after putting in so much hard work to get to where he is today.
Whatâs the point of working so hard when the better you do the more the government takes? Especially when you can sit on your â â â and live off of the tax dollars of the wealthy? ![]()
Im super glad my dad pays 120k in taxes a year. It means theres less for him and his family and more for bullets and bombs for illegal wars and payment for a massive government debt. And Iâm even more glad he gets to pay sales tax on top of that for every thing he buys. And that Iâll have to pay 50% of his wealth in taxes should he die unexpectedly and leave the fruits of his 45 years hard work to me or my sister or the family cat.
After all Gary, its only right that because hes a genius who has worked 65+ hours a week most of his life that he give up his ill gotten and undeserved excess to the all knowing state at gun point.
She still made the choice to go into the university lecturing field even when she knew the output of that job.
Your dad went into computers knowing the financial output of that sector, and benefitted from it.
They both chose their salaries.
This. I was in a history PHD program. I left because i knew it would be Yukis chance in hell that I would make tenure track prof somewhere.
Went into insurance and am making more now than if I had made tenure at a top school.
RNA was a dumb choice of initials for a clan.
NME ? Nipple Munching Enemas?
I wasnât really talking about that. I was responding to the topic of people working harder to get more money and that more highly skilled labour gives more money. Yes, in the case of my parents they chose their paths, but that wasnât an issue I wanted to get into. Anyway, good chat. Itâs interesting to hear some opinions from people here.
Money management is more important than salaries or wages.
Anyone can be âwealthyâ if they take time to learn how to invest.
True dat.
Reason Iâm F2P is because buying stock is more worth my money than gems.
Gotta get that snowball rolling.
Wads of cash and gold bars buried in mason jars in my back yard.

How did you find my stash
Well the random kung fu koalas in the back yard next to the tree with the fresh dug dirt was a give away.
Really tough to beat the koalas tho. Theyâre cute but the way the weild a bolo staff⌠terrifying
So howâre you feeling, Saitama?

Coke is better than Pepsi.
