Pengborg is one of those rare legendaries that has a lot of the general abilities without the final evolution. Evolving it adds Desperate Bite, allowing it to heal from HG and practically always getting a kill. Combined with overwatch it’s nasty… but is it worth pushing the cost from 8 to 13?
The main use for Penguinator in my mind has always been the insane Slayerbane All with excessive force meaning it sweeps the whole enemy team (as long as they’re not stealthed). Pengborg can do this at cost 8.
I’ve got a large selection of very strong legendaries now and I’m trying to look at where I can cut corners in cost so I can get the best possible team overall. By the looks of things you can’t get 16 legendaries without having a couple unevolved. I don’t think that’s going to be a good choice. But having Pengborg gives me a lot more wriggle room with secret skills on the other team members.
So how much does the Desperate Bite help out in practice? Would you value it over the 2-3 secret skills I can have on other monsters?
I fear that maybe in practice if I were to slayerbane all then the next four monsters that enter would likely kill it off before desperate bite has much use and to overwatch -> slayerbane all might take too long in a lot of cases. I am not experienced with this monster so wonder what you guys think.
Below, attached, is my current team. I’ve got a 6-cost monster simply because I can spare the total cost right now. This could be turned into a Moji to give way for secret skills. I’ve been very hesitant adding SS onto monsters until now. Could add in Cyclozar again or other higher cost monsters rather than adding secret skills onto the ones I currently have in my team. Just giving you an idea here of what I have to play around with but I’m thinking in the long-term about what’s best because I’ll get more legendaries which work best as 14-16 cost.

with current cost go with fully evolved, once he gets overwatch, his desperate bite will one shot anything… except protect focused grovo.
The thing about penguinator is that the OW and Desperate bite make him such a pain to deal with. The fact that he can guarantee a kill if you try to aim for him puts most people off and his AOE is stupidly strong compared to most.
TBH there are much better places you could save cost in your team. Just as an example you have absolutely zero stun protection, which i can guarantee will be capitalised on heavily. Cutting something like bovolcus for choc will not only solve that but drop your team cost down accordingly. Part of the reason you’re running out of cost is cause you’re using nothing but legendaries instead of considering what you’re weak to and what you’ll actually do if things don’t go to plan.
If pengborg comes on field and you can’t use slayerbane all due to nothing having kills then he isn’t going to do too much apart from overwatch and aoe. If he is ultrad then the enemy can’t kill him without him at least getting one kill off desperate bite and if they ignore him because of the fact he will desperate bite then he will get slayerbane charged. You want him ultrad
Alright I hear it that you’re more for evolving him than not. I’ll test him out next PvP unevolved to see how it is and make sure since there’s no going back.
As for my lack of stun protection, I literally just changed the monsters in my team so there will be more tweaks. I really want to test out how best to use Bovo, which is why he’s in there to stay for a while. Previously my team was weak to stun but you’d be surprised how well I could control things with sleep in the mid-game (before I removed Solblaze and Meta), pretty much stopping stun from getting the better of me.
A corner I plan on cutting (which I didn’t mention) is adding Bitterbeast somewhere. In PvE I have very little problem handling stun but for PvP he’ll be a great one to slip in. I will probably end up using him in PvE too just to keep the cost down and he’s strong anyway. I was previously using Phantomaiden to keep the cost down a bit.
I know it’s easy to look at someone else’s team and see a jumble of legendaries but this team (before my alterations today) could easily do 150 SoTF with only a couple of losses in total and in PvP gets me an easy top 100, towards top 50 at a push. I just switched in Chrome and Cyclo for PvP. I’m sorry to come across as defensive but I’ve used a team similar to this one for about 9 months and am comfortable handling stun as well as any other apparent gaps in defence. The only thing I really do struggle to handle is poison but to my understanding poison is a nightmare to deal with when they’re buffed opponents so I can’t expect to be well placed for tackling it with an all-round team like this.
Poison is always annoying in pve, so don’t worry too much about that.
Also if you want a tip for bovo put him direct after a stunner close to late/endgame. Also drop a tt near him, ideally a legend one if you have it. That’s the best setup I’ve found so far.
Also I don’t mean to come across as aggressive, like it’s not by any means a bad team, but I’m trying to get you into the thought process that goes behind top 5 teams. They are reactive more than anything, often you change things after a few matches depending on what you’re facing
Directly after a stunner so they send/step back and he gets a reliable opportunity to use DMM? I don’t quite follow that bit. Yeah I have a couple of ideas for where to put my TT, next to Bovo is one of them.
Yup and thanks for giving tips but the real question I wanted answered in depth was about what the pros and cons were of Pengborg Vs Penguinator. The screenshot of my team was simply to display some strong legends I have so people would take the question seriously rather than just saying “Penguinator is much better, evolve it”. I mean I have to value it against the potential other strong legendaries I could have in my team with their secret skills.
I’m almost completely set on evolving him now. But there are some great 16 cost monsters out there which I’ll get in the future and unfortunately I’ll be limited in their use. 5 cost for Desperate Bite is very decent though, plus when he gets duplicated (via Auro) he comes back with proper stats instead of a very nooby version of Pengborg.
