Well meeting each other started with meeting at ComicCon— a place filled with a huge number of both scary and nice people, and a place we’d be going either way. And then eventually people could “vouch” for each other (someone you had met irl had met so-and-so irl), taking the scary factor out altogether.
I mean in general rules for meeting people from the internet are: don’t meet someone at your house for a first meeting— pick a very public place.
We all interact with strangers all the time. It’s not really that different.
