I’ve used it on and off for all the years it’s been in the game and have been a big fan. I’ve definitely felt the changes over time. It used to be one of my favourite end-game monsters in PvP and I used it in a bunch of ways in PvE.
I’m surprised you say poison siphon being unlimited use in was important in PvE… the damage has always been poor for facing buffed monsters. Double survivor is the key thing for that. What Oakthulhu offers in PvE is huge control with the 150s stun + double repulse and auto-poison… then later double survivor. The drain move is just to keep alive and it’s super rare that I run out of uses when I want to heal.
I’ve been having lots of stun with it + Arboribratus during this special rule. It’s been doing really well. That combo has also done well in previous seasons. There’s some interesting and powerful plant support that’s come out recently.
I agree 16 cost is too much for Oakthulhu. I feel like the same is true for many legendaries now though. Lots of them could be 1 cost lower, especially when compared to mythics.
Like, say Lavatonix. Should he really be cost 16 when his SS is overwatch? Yes it’s instant but it’s 1 use.
Or geomaginus… Or terrordragon…or kaerukenshi… Or ziberious. Just so many mid tier legends with SS skills essential for their function, that do very little on their own… Should cost 14 or 15 max. Because otherwise there’s no reason to waste a slot on a mediocre legend for the cost of an awakened mythic.
I’m posting this not to make some new point or say anyone is wrong, just to show my experience using Oak in this special rule (0-50% speed monsters only). It really shined in this special rule so I got to showcase how powerful and controlling the combo with Arboribratus can be.
I already posted about this in another thread but wanted to drop things here since it’s the actual thread about Oak. This was my final result with the team.
The only losses were to Sherox twice with his team that had Ldiefaeth and Woolala with stealth too (hard counter) and a strong team behind it. The other loss was someone running both Dreadmoth and Ldiefaeth. They left Oakthulhu alive and ironically the instant poison flash would’ve won it for me but they ran two stun counters right by each other and behind the second was a Nightingale so I lined it all up but then they purified just in time.
