You get potions by winning events or when you roll a monster that you already have maxed at +9… You get a potion of the same rarity of the monster…

Ok, so if you roll a monster in an egg, but you already own that monster, it is gonna get a +1 instead (so you can’t have more than one copy of the same mons)… Each +1 gives your monster a discount on the time for his moves and +1 on his speed stat (well it’s a bit more complicated than that but this is pretty much it)… This caps at +9, after that you are instead going to get potions, which you can use to give +1 to any monster you want (of the corresponding rarity)… You can see the bonus of your monster right next to his name and cost… I hope I was clear enough… It is not easy to explain and especially in English xD
