I’m just starting out and need some advice. As you can see, I don’t have many monsters. I’m suggested continuing to collect gems or spending the ones I have on a Banner to get better monsters and increase my team’s power. Then, I’ll collect until I reach 500 gems and multiply them at Shrines. What do you recommend or what advice would help me progress in the game? I’m now starting the third Island of Story Mode. I would save until 500 gems. You can actually build a decent team with the stuff that you get for free. It won’t be able to complete the events but you’ll get many gems nevertheless.
Also it won’t take long to reach 500 if you have a lot of time to play!

Thanks so much for the advice. Depending on what I’m just starting out with, what’s the maximum Hero Rank I should reach, keeping in mind that the higher the rank, the more difficult the matchmaking becomes.
You’re an experienced player, so try to save till 500 gems without spending any gem.
It’s a very interesting experience and you feel a bit like playing the game as it’s predecessor Hunter Island was meant to be played.
I took 46 days on my 2nd account doing this till I reached the 500 shrine. I had the anniversary, you don’t, but in two month time you should be there 
Even PvP was sometimes funny, because your experience will let you win against much stronger teams. But overall l still lost mostly, due to unfair matchmaking, skill isn’t always enough. And admittedly my PvP skills are rather weak anyways.
