I am currently up to 20 monsters that are 4 stars and above, and oddly, not a single one has required a lamp of any kind. Is there a specific kind of monster that uses them?

Not really. Some protect focus tanks use them. Some of the bombers. At least one of the team turners. Some of the twinkillers use them and some of the assisted move monsters as well
